In June we were invited to celebrate the wedding of my cousin Karl-Fredrik and his fiance Johanna in Tanzania. They have spent the past year in Arusha, where Johanna has worked as a teacher and Karl-Fredrik has tried a few different jobs. Before returning to Sweden they decided to tie the knot surrounded by their closest friends and family on the Serengeti plains. Me and Johan were happy to be invited and were looking forward to a second trip to Tanzania this year. The cute couple were very cryptic in their invitation. We were to meet them at a hotel in Arusha on the 14th and we would be back on the 17th – exiting.

We started our journey on a 8 hour flight from London to Nairobi. After an encounter with african administration in Nairobi we managed to land on time in Kilimanjaro. After a few hours of sleep at the hotel we joined the other guests for breakfast and were then put in Dalla Dalla’s to travel to an unknown destination. Having been on safari 6 months before we knew that this could not be our means of transportation for safari. We were right! Soon we found ourselves at the local Arusha airport were we got to see the happy couple. Destination – Lamai Serengeti. Means of transportation – 3 small airplanes.

Finally there! After about an hour in the air we landed in North eastern Serengeti, close to our lodge, Lamai Serengeti. After about an hour’s game drive we were greeted by Nic, Jana and their fantastic team at the lodge. When we were taken to our rooms our jaws dropped. A wonderful big bed in the middle of the room with a view of the great plains right outside. When we asked the crew “Do you get a lot of animals in camp?” They quickly said, “Yes, all the time. Lions, baboons, klipspringers and many other species”. That’ll make you sleep good at night! The afternoon and evening continued with a fantastic lunch, game drive and we ended the evening, everyone in euphoria, with a great dinner.

Safari wedding day!
Finally the day had come for Karl-Fredrik and Johanna to get married. We started the day early with a game drive. We got to see elephants, zebras, giraffe, buffalo, crocodile, ostrich, my favorite – lilac-breasted roller and many more. It is truly fantastic to see all these animals in their natural habitat.

After lunch we all relaxed at the lodge, getting ready for the wedding. The boys had a “just before the ceremony bachelor party by the pool” and the girls were getting ready in their huts. When Johan and I came back to our room we found a bottle of Prosecco with compliments from Nic and Jana, congratulating us on our 1st wedding aniversary. A unexpected fantastic gesture and a amazing place to celebrate on.

Time to tie the knot! All fancied up we got in the jeeps and drove to the place chosen for the ceremony. After all had climbed the rock the bride arrived accompanied by her dad and we were all surprised when he removed his jacket to reveal his sea captain’s shirt as a sign that he was performing the ceremony. The ceremony was short and loving and ended with us all toasting the lovely couple. The wedding dinner and the whole night was fantastic and filled with joy.

Monday and Tuesday were spent in the bumpy jeeps on game drives. We got to see a rhino up close, a cheetah taking a nap in the grass by the car, hippos and crocs in the river and much more. After a fantastic trip with so many memories we ended the trip as we started, on a small airplane back to Arusha and then a 747 back to the UK.
